Week 5 - MBA 6101 - Ascend Your Start-Up
This week's reading reminded me of my learning curve and climb as assistant nurse director. I started this new position in February and was eager to make an impact. One of my first assigned tasks was to oversee all controlled substances transactions from the Omnicell. As a former staff and in this new role I knew the importance of wasting controlled substances within an hour was the expected standard. I sent emails to individual staff members. Staff became extremely upset to receive an email rather than me reaching out while they are at work. I took a step back and adjusted my approach. I started to print reports out, but staff became upset with delayed reports because I was trying to see them in person. So again, I stepped back and sent emails about reports.
As frustrating as it was to go from emails to face to face then back to emails, the staff learned to grow with my development, and I learned to adjust to their expectations. Similar to Helen describing how businesses need to take a step back and listen, I chose to step back and listen to my staff. I looked at the problem, discussed with staff why it was a problem, and explained the importance of addressing it quickly. The staff saw the time and dedication I took to address their concerns, how it impacted me, and were glad I spoke about it to them. Now we have a great working relationship and work together toward goals.
